Inside the Experience
Nestled in the heart of Catford, London, Tai Won Mein stands out as a cherished spot for those craving authentic Chinese cuisine without breaking the bank. This long-established restaurant at 90-92 Rushey Green brings together generous portions, speedy service, and a straightforward ordering style that captures the essence of a no-nonsense dining experience.
What truly defines Tai Won Mein is its commitment to delivering wholesome, fresh food that satisfies both comfort and craving. The standout dishes that receive high praise include the roast pork and duck served with fried rice—a combination celebrated for its rich flavors and ideal balance. Their noodle soups also offer a warm, satisfying bite, though some find the beef dishes less remarkable, hinting at opportunities to refine seasoning for a bolder taste. Despite this, the meals consistently impress with their freshness and substantial servings, making leftovers a common takeaway.
The atmosphere at Tai Won Mein is unpretentious, with a decor recently refreshed but still modest, keeping the focus firmly on the food itself. Customers appreciate the briskness of service, although occasional bumps like staggered meal delivery can slightly disrupt an otherwise smooth experience. The staff, while friendly and efficient, sometimes show a reserved demeanor that may stem from language nuances rather than indifference.
One practical note is the cash-only policy and limited drinks menu, which might feel outdated to some, yet it aligns with the traditional, straightforward approach of the restaurant. This simplicity is part of the charm, ensuring that the spotlight remains on the generous, flavorful dishes.
For anyone seeking authentic, affordable Chinese food in a communal, no-frills setting, Tai Won Mein is a rewarding choice. Its reputation among locals and visitors alike stems from consistent value, hearty portions, and classic recipes that capture the true taste of Cantonese comfort food. Whether you're a noodle soup enthusiast or a fan of crispy roast meats paired with fried rice, this is a place where the heart and heritage of Chinese cooking come alive on every plate.
“ As a Chinese I highly recommend this place as it meets all my expectation with a reasonable charge. Roast Pork & Duck with fried rice is on my top list. Noodle soup is nice while beef could have tasted better. Definitely will come again if I stay in London for bit longer. What a pity! ”
“ Big portion, taste good, quick service, reasonable price. Recommended! ”
“ I visited this place on Sunday, it wasn’t too crowded. Would have given it a 5 but the vibe from the staff wasn’t to open, I’m not sure if this is due to the language barrier. One of our meals came out earlier than the remaining and it was cold when the remaining of the meals had arrived. The atmosphere was alright, a bit cold- but I believe this was due to the area we were seated- no fault of the restaurant. The food was tasty, we opted to buy our own drink from the corner shop and there didn’t appear to be any issues with that as other guest had also purchased from other shops as well. Would definitely return. It’s tasty and affordable ”
“ After over 20 years of living in Catford, I finally visited this place recently and can’t believe what I’ve been missing my whole life. In a way, I’m slightly glad I’ve only just discovered it as I might have been double my size by now! This place is so so affordable and offers value for money - most people end up taking the leftovers home! ”
“ Friendly staff in a decently designed Chinese restaurant. Prices are ok but the restaurant is let down by being cash only, having a tiny drinks menu and the food being quite bland for Asain food. Portion sizes are massive but fortunately takeaway is an option for a 50p charge. It is worth coming in groups or for a quick meal. ”
